Nepal

The landlocked, mountainous nation borders the Indian states of Uttarakhand in the west, Uttar Pradesh in the south, Bihar in the southeast and West Bengal and Sikkim in the east. In the north, it shares a border with Xizang, the autonomous region of China known as Tibet.

With an area of 147,181 km², Nepal is slightly larger than 1.5 times the size of Portugal or somewhat larger than the U.S. state of Arkansas. Nepal has a population of 30.3 million (2021). The largest city and the national capital is Kathmandu.

The language spoken is Nepali; about half of the population speaks the official language Nepali, the rest use one of the more than 120 other Tibeto-Burman languages. The main religions are Hinduism (81%) and Buddhism (9%).

India

Capital and largest urban area of India is (New) Delhi; the second largest city is Mumbai. The official languages are Hindi-Urdu and English (the Indian Constitution lists 22 recognized languages).

Indonesia

Indonesia, a Nations Online country profile of the largest archipelago in the world. The island country is located in Maritime Southeast Asia, between the Indian Ocean (to the south and west), the Timor Sea and the Arafura Sea to the south, the Bay of Bengal to the northwest, the South China Sea (Pacific Ocean) and some other marginal seas, to the north. Indonesia maintains land borders with Malaysia (on the island of Borneo), with Papua New Guinea (on the island of New Guinea), and with Timor-Leste (East Timor) on the island of Timor. The country also shares maritime borders with Australia, India, Palau, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The country consists of five major islands and about 30 smaller groups. There are a total number of 17,508 islands, of which about 6000 are inhabited.

The largest islands are Sumatra, Java (with more than half of the country's population), Borneo (known as "Kalimantan" in Indonesia), Sulawesi, and New Guinea. Most of the larger islands are mountainous, with peaks ranging between 3,000 and 3,800 m.

The entire country lies in the southwestern arm of the "Ring of Fire," an extensive arc-shaped zone of prevalent volcanic activity, ocean trenches, fault lines, and plate movements that roughly parallels the coasts of the Pacific Ocean.The islands of Indonesia are prone to earthquakes and even tsunamis. The island nation ranks third among countries with the most volcanoes, behind the US and Russia.

With an area of 1,904,569 km², Indonesia is the largest country consisting only of islands. The combined area of the archipelago is slightly smaller than Mexico or larger than five times the size of Germany.

The multi-ethnic country has a population of more than 271 million people (in 2021). It is by far the most populous island nation in the world. There are more than 1,300 recognized ethnic groups in Indonesia. The six largest ethnic groups are Javanese (40%), Sundanese (16%), Batak (4%), Sulawesi (3%), Madurese (3%) and Betawi (3%).

The capital and largest city is Jakarta on the island of Java (pop. 10 million); other major cities are Bandung, Medan, Surabaya. The official language is Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia). The main religion is Islam; almost nine-tenths of the Indonesian population are Muslims, the majority are Sunnis.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh, a Nations Online country profile of the independent nation in southern Asia. Bangladesh came into being as the People's Republic of Bangladesh when Bengali East Pakistan seceded from the union with (West) Pakistan in 1971.

The country is situated in the fertile plains of the Ganges (Padma) River delta and borders the Bay of Bengal. Bangladesh borders various states of India in the west, north and east and has a short border with Myanmar (Burma) in the southeast.

The country occupies an area of 143,998 km², compared, it is slightly larger than Greece (131,957 km²) or slightly smaller than the US state of Iowa.

Myanmar

Myanmar has a long coastline along the Bay of Bengal, the Gulf of Mottama and the Andaman Sea in the south. It borders China in the north and northeast, Laos and Thailand in the east, and Bangladesh and the Indian states of Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram in the northwest.

The country covers an area of 676,578 km², making it almost twice the size of Germany or slightly smaller than the US state of Texas.

Myanmar has a population of 55 million people (2021 est.). Largest city, former capital, and economic center of Myanmar is Yangon (Rangoon). Since 2005 Burma's new (administrative) capital is Naypyidaw, a planned city in the country's central part.

Spoken languages are Burmese (official); Kachin, Kayah, Karen, Chin, Mon, Rakhine, and Shan are major regional languages. Rohingya, the language of the Rohingya people from Rakhine State is spoken by about 1.3 million. According to the United Nations, the Rohingya are one of the most persecuted minorities in the world. In 2017 hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fled from western Myanmar into neighboring Bangladesh because of the repression and violence they face in Myanmar.

Thailand

Thailand, the Kingdom in Southeast Asia. The country is bordered in west and northwest by Myanmar (Burma), in south west by the Andaman Sea, in east and north east by Lao PDR, in south east by Cambodia, in south by the Gulf of Thailand (an inlet of the South China Sea), and by Malaysia. In south the country occupies a part of the Malay Peninsula.

Thailand covers an area of 513,120 km², the country is just slightly larger than Spain or slightly more than twice the size of the U.S. state of Wyoming. Until 1939 the country was known as Siam.

The Kingdom has a population of 68 million people, by far the largest city is Bangkok, the national capital with estimated 12 million citizens. Spoken language is Thai.

Vietnam

Vietnam, officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, is a long streched country along the eastern coast of the Indochinese Peninsula.

Vietnam borders China in north, Laos and Cambodia in west. The nation is bordering the South China Sea in east, and the Gulf of Tonkin with the island of Hainan Dao (China) in north-east. The country shares maritime borders with Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand.

With an area of 331,689 km² Vietnam is about three times the size of Bulgaria or slightly larger than the U.S. state of New Mexico.

Vietnam has a population of 92.6 million people (in 2016), it is the 13th most populous country in the world.

Spoken language is Vietnamese, English is increasingly favored as a second language, and there are still people speak some French.

Capital city of Vietnam is Hanoi (Ha Noi), former capital of the Republic of Vietnam and largest city is Ho Chi Minh City (also known as Saigon).

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, located between the Laccadive Sea in west and the Bay of Bengal in east. The island is situated about 30 km (19 mi) south east of the southern coast of India. Sri Lanka consists of a main island and a number of smaller islands. Until 1972 the country was known as Ceylon.

The islands cover an area of 65,610 km², compared the country is about 1.5 times the size of Denmark, or slightly larger than the U.S. state West Virginia.

Sri Lanka has a population of 21.2 million people (in 2016), capital is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, a satellite city of Sri Lanka's largest city Colombo. Spoken languages are Sinhala (official and national language) 74%, Tamil (a national language) 18%, other 8%, about 10 % of the population speak English as a second language.

Cambodia

Cambodia has a population of about 14.6 million people (in 2013). Capital city is Phnom Penh. Spoken languages are predominantly (90%) Khmer, a Mon–Khmer language, and Vietnamese (5%).

China

China, a virtual guide to the Middle Kingdom, the most populated country on earth, which in turn is also a controversial nation.

The People's Republic of China (PRC) is a sovereign state in East Asia, bordering the East China Sea, Korea Bay, Yellow Sea, and South China Sea. China is bordered by 14 countries: Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, North Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia,  Myanmar (Burma), Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Vietnam. Furthermore it shares maritime borders with Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Taiwan.

China occupies an area of 9,598,094 km², making it the second largest Asian country (after the Asian part of Russia) and the 4th largest country in the world, it is slightly smaller than the USA.

Of China's population of 1,367 million people (2015) are 91.5% Han people, the remaining 8.5 % are 'ethnic minorities', after all still 114 million people. Larger ethnic minorities are Zhuang, Manchu, Uyghur, Hui, Miao, Yi, Tujia, Mongols, and Tibetans.

China's capital city is Beijing, its largest city is Shanghai. Official language is Mandarin, other spoken languages are Wu (Shanghainese), Yue (Cantonese), Min (Minnan, Mindong, others), Xiang, Gan, Hakka, and various Mandarin dialects and Patuá (a Portuguese creole).

Laos

Laos, a landlocked country in Southeast Asia on the Indochinese peninsula between Thailand and Vietnam, and north of Cambodia. Laos shares also short borders with China and Myanmar (Burma).

Laos was part of French Indochina, it became independent in 1953, but for most of the next 25 years it was torn by civil strife between the communist Pathet Lao movement and government supporters. In 1975, the Pathet Lao achieved total control, and a communist republic was established, the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

The country covers an area of 236.800 km², compared it is about the size of Romania, or slightly larger than the US state of Utah.

Laos has a population of 6.5 million inhabitants (in 2015). Capital and largest city is Vientiane (Viang Chan). Spoken languages are Laotian (official) and Thai. The majority of the Laotian people are Buddhists (67%).

Philippines

Philippines, a Nations Online country profile of the archipelago in Maritime Southeast Asia. The island nation is situated south of Taiwan, between the South China Sea in the west and the Pacific Ocean in the east. Located in the southwestern part of Luzon is the capital of the Philippines, Manila, the largest city is Quezon City, both are part of Metro Manila, a metropolis with a population of almost 13 million people. Spoken languages are Filipino and English (both official); 19 more languages are regional recognized.

Pakistan

Pakistan, a Nations Online country profile of the South Asian nation, formerly part of the British Empire in India.

The Islamic Republic is situated between the Karakoram mountain range, the Himalayas and China in the northeast, Afghanistan in the northwest, Iran in the southwest, the Arabian Sea in the south, and India in the east.

The world's fifth most populous country (in 2022) is home to more than 228 million people. Pakistan's capital is Islamabad. The most important port, the largest city and the biggest economic center of the country is Karachi. Pakistan's second-largest city is Lahore. Other major Pakistani cities are Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, Gujranwala, Hyderabad (Pakistan), Peshawar, and Quetta. Spoken languages are Urdu (a form of Hindustani), English (both official), Punjabi, Sindhi, Dari, Balochi, and Pashto.Main religion is Islam (96%).
